How to pose for your wedding photoshoot
Posing for wedding photos can seem a bit intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be! The key is to relax, be yourself, and trust your photographer. Here are some tips to help you pose naturally and look your best in wedding photos:
- Relax and Be Natural: Take a deep breath and try to relax. Genuine smiles and expressions come through when you feel comfortable. From experience, I know that couples go through the stress of the day, but deep breathing throughout your day to remember you it is YOUR big day have helped. I sometimes have a keyword with my clients to remind them to take a breath. The best shots come straight after.
- Trust Your Photographer: Choose a photographer whose style you love and trust their expertise. Meeting your photographer before is key as it will help him better understand you and the style of photography you’d like.
- Practice Posing Beforehand: Spend some time practicing basic poses in front of a mirror. This can help you discover your most flattering angles. Most people already know what is ‘their best side’ for posing. However, if you’re still in doubt, especially as this time it’s not only you but you’re rather posing as a couple, I would recommend you organise a pre-wedding photoshoot. This usually takes up to 2 hours, but it will help you be more relaxed on your actual wedding photoshoot.
- Engage with Your Partner: Interact with your partner during the photoshoot. Genuine interactions, like a shared laugh or a tender moment, make for beautiful and authentic photos.
- Be Mindful of Your Posture: Stand up straight with your shoulders back. Good posture not only looks better in photos but also conveys confidence.
- Avoid Stiff Poses: Keep movement natural. Avoid stiff poses by shifting your weight from one leg to the other or walking slowly. Movement adds dynamism to your photos.
- Embrace Candid Moments: Some of the best wedding photos are candid. Forget about the camera and enjoy the moment. Candid shots capture the genuine emotions of the day.
- Use Your Hands Thoughtfully: Don’t let your hands hang awkwardly. Hold hands with your partner, put your hands in your pockets, or gently touch your partner’s face or shoulder for a more relaxed look.
- Experiment with Angles: Try different angles to see what works best for you. Tilt your head slightly, experiment with looking off-camera, or find a unique perspective.
- Incorporate Your Surroundings: Use the wedding venue and surroundings to your advantage. Lean against a beautiful backdrop, sit on a staircase, or walk hand in hand through a picturesque area.
- Express Emotion: Think about the emotions you want to convey in the photos. Whether it’s love, joy, or excitement, expressing genuine emotions enhances the overall feel of the images.
- Consider the Lighting: Be aware of the lighting and how it affects your photos. If shooting outdoors, early morning or late afternoon often provides soft, flattering light. Your photographer will be best to guide you in this matter.
- Communication with Your Photographer: Maintain open communication with your photographer. If there’s a specific pose or style you have in mind, don’t hesitate to discuss it with them.
- Relax Your Face: Avoid tense facial expressions. Relax your face and jaw to achieve a more natural and pleasant look.
- Have Fun: Remember, it’s your wedding day! Have fun with the photoshoot, and let your happiness and love shine through.
Ultimately, the most important thing is to be yourself and enjoy the process. Your wedding photos should reflect the unique and beautiful connection between you and your partner.
